Clinical Data Usage for Research

Abstract: Healthcare is large industry that has a robust research agenda supported by government, industry and foundations. While clinical research uses data largely from the electronic health records, it also leverages other data sources. This discussion covers the background and basic tenets of healthcare informatics, data formats, research data acquisition including the IRB, data quality, historical references, UC procedures and the many facets of harmonizing data from those disparate data sources.
Biography: Professor Harnett joined the faculty at the University of Cincinnati in 2004 and serves as the Director for the UC Center for Health Informatics. His academic appointment is in Biomedical Informatics, is a member of the UC Institutional Review Board and co-chair for the university R&D committee. Prior to joining UC, Brett was the Director of Experimental Information Technology for a NASA-sponsored research program in Virginia and a Systems Analyst at Yale University in Connecticut. Brett received his undergraduate degree in Business Administration from Eastern Connecticut State University and his Master’s Degree in Information Systems from UC. Brett has 17 peer-reviewed published articles and five book chapters. Extramural activities include being a member of the Editorial Board for the Telemedicine and e-Health journal, a scientific reviewer for the National Institutes of Health and reviewer for numerous peer- reviewed journals.
